Abstract
If we are to characterize the social-philosophical and the philosophical-political views of Stefan Marek Daxner, we have to emphasize, first of all, his attempt at a synthesis of the conception of law, creation and democracy. Thi synthesizing approach has never been pronounced by Daxner programmatically, though implicitely it is contained in all of his works. The result of this synthesis is in Daxner’s idea of nation as a unity of not only historical, linguistic and territorial, but first of all of social, legal and political components. The idea of nation in Daxner’s work is closely connected with that of civil freedom, which — like national freedom, is defined politically-legally. In this respect Daxner had surpassed the majority of his contemporaries and had instructively effected the development of ideas that led the Slovak national liberating movement in the latter half of the last century.
