Abstract

The paper presents the theme of the changing historical meanings of democracy. It recalls some of the key elements of Athenian democracy. Further, it explores the changing conception of democracy in the era of nation-states and considers the meaning of democracy in the context of the progressive enmeshment of states and societies in international and global networks.
