Abstract
The paper examines an old controversy between deductionism and inductionism. Verification and falsification are mutually dependent. However, especially in empirical sciences there can be no falsification without verification. According to both conceptions, the scientific theories are only hypothetical, based on assumptions, and probable. At the same time, it is impossible to determine the degrele of their probability. It is an error to believe, that the deductive falsification grants a higher certainity than the inductive verification does. All sciences need the procedures of corroboration and refutation.
