Call for Papers for the Journal Ethics & Bioethics (in Central Europe)
Special Issue on the Work of Peter Singer
We are pleased to announce a special issue of Ethics & Bioethics (in Central Europe) dedicated to the philosophical work of Peter Singer, to be published in December 2025.
Peter Singer is one of the most influential philosophers of our time. His work has reshaped our understanding of various ethical issues such as animal rights, bioethics, effective altruism, and global poverty. Singer’s works on the importance of reducing suffering and promoting well-being, such as Animal Liberation, Practical Ethics, The Expanding Circle, How Are We to Live?, Rethinking Life and Death, The Life You Can Save, and Ethics in the Real World, have challenged and inspired scholars, activists, and policymakers worldwide.
This special issue aims to celebrate and critically engage with Singer’s extensive body of work on the eve of his retirement. As we face ongoing global challenges such as climate change, health crises, and increasing inequality, Singer’s work is more relevant than ever. By drawing on both invited contributions and submissions, we aim to create an impactful collection that underscores the ongoing significance of Singer’s ideas and the importance of engaging with these global ethical challenges.
In a foreword, Singer will provide his reflections on the themes covered and the ongoing relevance of his work in today’s ethical landscape.
The special issue will be organized into four main themes, reflecting the breadth of Singer’s philosophical contributions:
- The ethics of our treatment of animals: Topics may include, but are not limited to, the critique of speciesism, vegetarianism and veganism, the impact of industrial farming practices, and the ethical considerations in animal research.
- Bioethics: Topics may include, but are not limited to, issues such as euthanasia, infanticide, reproductive rights, and medical ethics.
- Utilitarianism and effective altruism: Topics may include, but are not limited to, the principle of equal consideration of interests, the measurement and comparison of well-being, the application of utilitarianism to public policy, and critiques of utilitarianism. Additionally, papers may address theoretical foundations, practical applications, and criticisms of effective altruism.
- Global poverty: Topics may include, but are not limited to, the ethics of charitable giving, the role of wealth in reducing suffering, and the responsibilities of individuals and governments in addressing global inequality.
Submissions should be original, unpublished works of approximately 6000 words, including references. The deadline for submitting a 500-word abstract is March 20, 2025. The deadline for submitting full papers is July 20, 2025.
