Abstract
The author investigates how, in scientific explanation, the criteria of verity, probability, non-contradictoriness and fertility are applied. Thus he combines the semantic approach with the syntactical and practical aspects. He presents some examples from the history of sciences and points out that formal criteria are necessary, but not sufficient for securing objective verity and practical efficacy of explanation. The task of criteria in explanation cannot be elucidated independently of the principal solution of the basic philosophical question.
