Abstract
The paper is concerned with the nature and function of axioms or common principles in Aristotle's theory of demonstrative science. Having formulated the law of contradiction, the law of the excluded middle, as well as the axiom EQUALS, the author discusses especially problems concerning the function of axioms as principles common to more than one science. The next part of the paper deals with the Aristotle's solution based on the analogical nature of axioms. In addition, the question of useing the axioms as premises in demonstrations is analysed. In conclusion he examines some historical aspects of the role of axioms in Aristotle's theory of science and in Greek mathematics.
