Abstrakt

Cassirer’s philosophy of symbolic forms affirms the autonomy and plurality of distinct modes of objectification, yet assigns mathematical cognition a distinctive systematic role. This paper reconstructs his functional conception of mathematics and argues that its privilege lies in the relation it establishes between spontaneity and the given. In pure mathematics, ideal manifolds are constituted through relational principles; mathematical natural science extends this formative activity to empirical nature through lawful functional determination. Scientific cognition thus becomes a privileged site of spirit’s selfrecognition without providing a standard for the validity of the other symbolic forms.
