Abstract

The paper examines methodological problems of quantification as a method of scientific cognition. The authors analyze quantitative methods in the experiment. They show that measure is a unifying factor of quality and quantity in view of the two categories. If a figure sign is added to a measure, the measure enters in this unifying function in a causal process which is called measurement. Measurement is analyzed here as the basic quantitative concept. The very concept of quantification is understood as a transition from classificatory notions to metrical notions. In the end of the paper it comes out that observation and measurement are a substantial, mediating link between objects and phenomena of the material world.
