Abstrakt

This paper examines the ontological and phenomenological implications of digital “entities” – digital simulations of the deceased – through the combined lens of Martin Heidegger’s ontology of death and Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and ontology of corporeality. It explores the ontological status of these “entities” and the way in which they reshape the relation of the living to death and to corporeality. The digital deceased cannot be understood simply as new tools of mourning. Rather, they introduce a deeper ontological and phenomenological disruption, because they simulate personal existence without sharing the existential and embodied conditions through which personal existence acquires meaning. Unlike existing Heideggerian analyses of digital mourning, this paper brings his ontology of death into a systematic dialogue with Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and ontology of corporeality.
