Abstract
The subject of the paper is the role Weber plays in the history of the interpretations of modern western culture. Two basic Weber’s approaches to the phenomenon are investigated: the first one is his enumeration of the most significant characteristics of modernity, and the second one is his analysis of the rationalization process, which on Weber’s view is the process intrinsic to the modernity as such. Weber saw the modem culture as the rationalized one. It is just this concept of rationalization that is profoundly analyzed in the second part of the paper.
